PMP First, Next, and Best Questions

The prompt word changes the job. Read the situation around it, identify what matters now, and choose a response that fits the moment instead of reaching for a memorized keyword.

A quick reset

Read the whole decision, not one keyword.

Situation: What is true in the scenario right now?

Sequence: What has already happened or been decided?

Fit: Which response respects the facts and constraints?

Three different asks

What first, next, and best mean in a scenario

Treat each word as a cue to inspect the scenario. It narrows the kind of judgment the question wants; it does not prescribe one universal project-management action.

01 · Prompt cue

First

What needs attention before a solution?

Find the immediate issue, then look for risks, missing facts, and constraints that should shape the response. The right opening move depends on what the scenario actually tells you.

02 · Prompt cue

Next

What has already happened?

Start from the actions and decisions already described. Choose a sensible follow-up that respects the project process and the authority of the people involved.

03 · Prompt cue

Best

Which option fits this situation most closely?

Compare plausible responses against the specific facts and constraints. A familiar keyword can be a clue, but it is not a substitute for matching the response to the scenario.

A repeatable reading method

Slow down for the decision point.

A short reset can help you compare answers on their fit, not on how familiar their wording sounds.

  1. 01

    Name the prompt

Mark whether it asks what to do first, next, or best.

  2. 02

    Locate the moment

Separate what is happening now from what the team has already done.

  3. 03

    Notice the limits

Check for risk, missing information, process, and decision authority.

  4. 04

    Compare the choices

Choose the response that addresses this scenario, then review why it fits.

Put the method to work

Practice across approaches and PMP domains.

In the PMP Sprint practice library, filter published questions by Agile, Predictive, or Hybrid methodology and by People, Process, or Business Environment domain. Answer a question, then review the feedback and rationale.
